My role in this project
This project is a stand-alone project where I first conceptualized and illustrated the game. I then developed a basic prototype using Unity2D.
Projektübersicht
For the prototype, I chose 10 birds to serve as the main characters in the game (from left to right): Goldfinch, Starling, Eurasian Jay, Blue Tit, Wren, Crow, Field Sparrow, Chaffinch, Robin, Blackbird.
User Interface Elements
During the game, the player maintains a bird observation journal, allowing them to observe and photograph the birds to learn more about their characteristics and preferences.
Animations
To capture the uniqueness of each bird species within the constraints of pixel art, individual animations were created for each bird. This ensures they come across as distinct characters and enhances the overall enjoyment of the game. Each bird has three animations designed for various purposes: Idle, Walk, and Singing.
Setting
During the game, players can maintain their personal digital garden to attract more and more birds. In addition, they can discover new bird species during their walks through the forest and learn about their songs, preferences and characteristics.
Unlockable Items
During the game, players can unlock various bird-friendly items or plants for their garden, such as birdbaths, perches, deadwood, hawthorn, cinnamon rose, dogwood or wildflower meadows. These attract birds or insects like flies or earthworms and serve as a natural food source for their new feathered friends.
Possible use and extensions
A concept for a game has been created that is intended to develop and foster an affection for native birds among players. This affection is intended to exceed the boundaries of the digital space and motivate players to implement the reliable bird conservation methods learned in the game in real life. The basic concept of the game offers a lot of potential for future expansions, such as adapting the garden to the seasons and adding more bird species. The game can be used both privately and in educational settings, such as biology classes in schools.
Coding Experience
For this project, I decided to expand my programming skills by coding a basic prototype of the game in C# in Unity2D. It was a great experience to see the birds come to life by walking across the screen and interacting with them. I'm curious to do more projects with Unity. If you are interested in seeing the prototype, feel free to reach out.
